2023: HIV Stigma Petition
I never heard the phrase ‘imitation is the biggest form of flattery’ more, than during my 10 years as a drag queen. However, I’d be the first to say my hastily if not thrown-together homage to Freddie Mercury’s Housewife from the smash hit Queen video ‘I Want to Break Free’ is total cringe!
In a bid to attract attention to the UK Gov HIV Stigma Petition, I had to get somewhat inventive to encourage people to sign. While doing the housework on my day off and listening to Queen. I, like most started to hum and sing along to ‘I Want to Break Free’ which was reminiscent of what I wanted the petition to achieve in breaking free from HIV Stigma.
I’d seen the Queen/Freddie housewife costume online and I thought I’d somehow parody the video by dressing as the housewife. I felt this was a little fun as opposed to my incessant posting of dreary links on my social media and perhaps, maybe, just maybe it would spread far and wide.
Costume, wig, and heels arrived I dashed down to Superdrug for make-up supplies. I went simple without blending just like the 80s. I had to mascara my ginger tache’ before trying to work out the choreography without any planning and having been diagnosed with the new COVID-19 variant ‘Priola’ the day before by my doctor.
